19/02/03 The Sun Newspaper - Tipsy Tatu kiss and make up

THE saucy girls from TATU are mates again after their vicious catfight last week which left JULIA VOLKOVA needing hospital treatment.

Julia, who injured her right leg in the bust-up — celebrated her 18th birthday by snogging bandmate LENA KATINA in front of partygoers at a plush hotel in Prague.

The pair – on course for a fourth week at No1 with All The Things She Said – shocked onlookers with their passionate kiss.

A drunken Julia, who isn’t actually 18 until tomorrow, passed out at her table after downing drink after drink in the Selsky Dvur Hotel. Shortly afterwards a sozzled Lena joined her for a snooze.

One partygoer said: “It was very funny when Julia fell asleep. Next thing we knew Lena got her head down too. Julia was even snoring.”

The dark-haired singer had earlier been given a massive toy elephant and a gold bracelet from her manager IVAN SHAPOVALOV as well as a three-tier-cake with marzipan statues of the two girls on top.

My source said: “It was an amazing bash which cost thousands – paid for by Ivan.”

12/02/03 www.dotmusic.com - Album Review'200 km/h In The Wrong Lane'

A powerhouse pop number one produced by Trevor Horn, scandalous gay sex, tabloid tantrums, clumsy BBC censorship and sinister svengalis in the background. Anyone old enough to remember Frankie Goes To Hollywood may be feeling a distinct sense of deja vu right now. For the rest of the lucky population, tATu's emergence must seem like being hit by a bolt of lightning: shockingly, brilliantly, excitingly new.

And as with Frankie, the media have typically missed the point. To describe tATu as paedophilia fodder is to misunderstand their appeal. The school uniforms may superficially appeal to men, but the rest of tATu, from their belligerent attitude to their adrenaline pop, is designed to keep them at arm's length. tATu are really interested in the hearts and minds of teenage girls, and from Moldova to the Mississippi they're winning them. These are two girls in uniforms who won't be hit one more time, weren't born to make you happy, and will never be a slave 4 u.

In fact, the most disturbing thing about tATu is just how refreshing - how damned good - they are. Pop has so long been in the thrall of the airbrushed, minimalist sonic stylings of r'n'b that songs as unpredictable and plain oddball as the ones on '200 km/hr In The Wrong Lane' are almost a revelation.

Flitting from piano riffs to Oakenfold techno, synth-heavy europop to pumping guitars, the album is almost as frantic as its title suggests. But quality control is paramount, whether on the lovely, sobbing melancholia of 'Stars' or the insistent, angular melodies of 'Clowns'.

There are three outstanding highlights. 'All The Things She Said' is perfect pop, as tender as it is infectious, a lovelorn lesbian love song that makes tATu's actual sexuality irrelevant. And 'Not Gonna Get To Us' is stupendous, an amphetamine pop monster with a bolshy attitude to make Kelly Osbourne grind her teeth with envy. Like a Russian 'Spice Up Your Life', it's a certain number one. Both songs are also included in Russian versions, and sound even more startling sung in that beautiful, dramatic language.

Then there's their audacious cover of The Smiths' 'How Soon Is Now', which kicks the original half to death then gives it the kiss of life. Retaining the atmosphere and shuddering guitars, it adds taut piano melodrama and a steely punk chorus. "You shut your mouth", they yell, and only a foolhardy critic would refuse. In fact, there's only one interesting question left for tATu: how the hell do they top this?

02/02/03 CBBC Newsround - Tatu make it to top of the chart

Tatu, the Russian teenagers who have been causing a bit of a stir, have leapfrogged over David Sneddon to take the number one chart spot.

Julia Volkova, 16, and Lena Katina, 17, took the top spot from the Fame Academy winner with All The Things She Said.

But it hasn't all been plain sailing to the top for the gals.

Their video has caused some people to get angry because it shows them kissing in the rain behind bars, dressed in school uniforms.

Some think it's too naughty and the girls go "too far".

TV presenters Richard Madely and Judy Finnegan have even asked people to boycott the single.

The girls say they are going out together.

But there have been rumours that this is just make-believe for their image and that they actually have boyfriends back home in Russia.

02/02/03 www.reuters.com - Russian Lesbian Duo Top British Pop Chart

LONDON (Reuters) - A controversial Russian pop duo accused of targeting the "dirty old man market" with lesbian kisses and schoolgirl outfits, shot to the top of the British singles chart Sunday, the Official UK Charts Company said.

Tatu's debut single, "All the Things She Said," has already proved popular in the rest of Europe, claiming the No. 1 spots in Switzerland, Italy and Spain. It moved up 176 places to No. 1 in its second week in the UK charts, the Official UK Charts Company said.

The band's name translates as "This Girl Loves That Girl."

In the music video Julia Volkova and Lena Katina wear school uniforms and kiss and cuddle. Child protection charity Kidscape accused the pair of "targeting the dirty old man market."

British daytime television hosts, husband and wife team Richard and Judy, branded their antics "pedophile porn" and called for them to be banned.

02/02/03 - BBC denies Tatu video ban

The BBC has denied banning the video by teenage duo Tatu from being shown on Top Of The Pops. Tatu - Russians Julia Volkova, 17, and Lena Katina, 18 - went straight to number one on Sunday with their single All The Things She Said.
The single's video, which shows the pair kissing one another while dressed in school uniform, has led to calls for a ban amid accusations of "pedophilic pop". Top Of The Pops will not show the video on Friday, but the BBC says this is because it has better exclusive footage of the duo. "We are not showing it this week. It has been around for a while, and Top Of The Pops has access to a number of never-seen-before versions of Tatu's live performances. "She said the show had not ruled out showing the video in future.

However, it is understood the BBC is sensitive to fears that the video may offend some viewers if it is shown before the 2100 watershed. Top Of The Pops is aired at 1930 on Fridays, and any footage would be shown shortly before 2000.

Tatu have sold about 100,000 copies of the single to knock David Sneddon - winner of TV talent show Fame Academy - off the top spot. Daytime TV presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan have campaigned against the duo. Madeley described them as "sick", while Finnigan denounces them as "pedophilic entertainment".

The girls were 14 when they were discovered in Moscow by Ivan Shapovalov, a child psychologist and advertising executive. He has admitted that Tatu are an "underage sex project" designed to appeal to men in search of "underage entertainment". Anti-pedophile campaigners have also denounced the act.

The child protection charity Kidscape described them as "pathetic" and said child pornography was not a laughing matter. The teenagers say they are lovers, although many pop industry observers believe their image is manufactured and they are said to have boyfriends in Russia.
